About this pickup:
This is YOUR pickup...
YOU choose the number of winds
YOU choose the magnet wire used
YOU select the magnets
YOU give it a name, if you like :D
What you need to know...
Magnet wire size:
42awg thickest, least resistance
43awg less treble than 42awg for the same number of winds.
44awg less treble and mids, compensate with ceramic magnets
IF three bobbins were wound with each type of wire, and had the exact same number of winds, the 42awg version would be a fuller sound compared to 43awg and 44awg. The 42awg would have the lowest DC resistance. 43awg allows more winds and therefore output, and 44awg more again.
Minimum-Maximum number of winds for each guage of wire, per bobbin:
42awg 4500-6000 (roughly works out to be 3.4k to 4.8k DC per bobbin)
43awg 5000-7800 (roughly works out to be 4.8k to 7.5k DC per bobbin)
44awg 5500-9000 (roughly works out to be 6.4k to 11.0k DC per bobbin)
The more winds you add, the more treble you lose. Adjust magnet choice to compensate. At the mimumum number of winds, expect a low output pickup. Going to the extreme is also not necessarily the best option, but we can do it.
NOTE: The output suggestions above are for SIX string pickups. Want a seven or eight? Sure! The DC resistance will be roughly 25% higher for seven strings, and roughly 50% higher for eights. Example? A six string bobbin at 6000 winds is roughly 4.7k DC. 6000 winds of 43awg is roughly 5.9k DC, and 44awg would be rough 7.0k DC for 6000 winds.
Magnets:
A2 warmest tone, lowest output
A5 bright tone, higher output
A8 tighter lows, good highs, more output than A5
Ceramic boosts trebles and bass, most output of all
Poles:
Slugs are slightly warmer than screws. They have more output.
Socket head poles have more grit, than screws or slugs. Output similar to slugs.
Four conductor wiring standard so you can really get creative with how you choose to wire it up.
Colour codes:
Red - hot
Black - ground
White and Green - Series link (only used for coil split)
NOTE: This is YOUR pickup. YOU will tell us what you think is right. We make no claims what you'll choose will be what you want. WE CANNOT GIVE ANY ADVICE OR SUGGESTIONS. YOU will have done ALL the research you needed to, before purchasing. Being custom wound for YOU, absolutely, no chance of ever ever getting a refund on these if they aren't exactly what you imagined in your head. It's on YOU! Having said that, have fun :)
Want to play around with some numbers? Here you go, link to coil estimator.
Use "PAF 50mm" for bobbins,
Use "single" for insulation build.
Use the dimensions Length 2.32" (6s) 2.70" (7s) 3.11 (8s), Width 0.255", Height 0.25" and Flange 0.7" for bobbin sizes.
Enter the DC resistance in ohms (usually pickups are measured in K ohms, so remove the decimal point: EG 4.7k = 4700).
Your windings calculation will be shown at "tight machine (90.7%)" column, and "winds" row.
NOTE: This is a cool tool to ESTIMATE parameters. HOWEVER, despite being accurate to a point, expect up to a 10% different reading for the DC resistance. This is unavoidable.
